ABOUT US
ABOUT US
We exist because a devastating condition demands urgent answers and affected families deserve more than silence.
OUR MISSION
Beyond Disintegration is a developing UK organisation focused on profound and unexplained neurodevelopmental regression resulting in severe acquired disability in children.
We are particularly concerned with children who were previously developing typically, or near typically, before experiencing significant and often permanent loss of language, cognition, adaptive functioning, engagement, independence, and developmental skills.
We are not seeking to reject autism diagnoses wholesale, nor to promote predetermined theories about causation. Rather, we believe it is scientifically reasonable to ask whether some children experiencing profound unexplained regression may represent clinically important subgroups with distinct
biological, neurological, metabolic, immune, inflammatory, genetic, or other mechanisms currently being obscured within broad diagnostic systems.
A central concern for Beyond Disintegration is the gap between descriptive diagnosis and mechanistic understanding.
A diagnosis such as ASD may accurately describe a child’s observable presentation, but for many families it does not adequately explain the profound acquired loss of previously established skills and functioning that they witnessed occur in their child.
Beyond Disintegration believes the regression itself should not be viewed merely as a side note within a broader diagnostic label, but as a critically important clinical event deserving ongoing scientific curiosity, neurological interest, and targeted investigation.
Whilst some research into regression within autism does exist, the field remains comparatively fragmented and underdeveloped relative to the severity and lifelong impact of these presentations. We believe the current scale of targeted research into catastrophic developmental regression does not yet reflect the urgency and complexity experienced by affected children and families.
We also believe there is a need to strengthen medical pathways surrounding catastrophic developmental regression. Children presenting with severe acquired loss of functioning should, where clinically appropriate, have access to evolving and thorough investigation pathways aimed at identifying known, emerging, or potentially treatable causes wherever possible.
At present, profound regression presentations remain dispersed across broad and highly heterogeneous diagnostic systems. Some children may ultimately prove biologically linked, whilst others may represent entirely distinct conditions or mechanisms. Without subgroup recognition, targeted cohort building, and rigorous research, these questions cannot be meaningfully answered.
History has shown that some conditions once grouped within broad neurodevelopmental classifications were later found to have distinct underlying biological causes following targeted research. Beyond Disintegration believes children who remain profoundly regressive and unexplained, despite extensive investigation, deserve the same scientific curiosity and commitment to deeper understanding.
We are not claiming that all children within this subgroup share a single cause or condition. Rather, we believe targeted subgroup research is essential if
science is to build greater clarity around these presentations and identify where meaningful biological distinctions may exist.
OUR SCIENTIFIC POSITION
Beyond Disintegration supports evidence-based scientific research and
respectful collaboration with clinicians, researchers, and families.
The organisation does not promote unproven treatments or predetermined
theories regarding the causes of developmental regression. Our aim is to
advocate for greater scientific understanding, subgroup-focused research, and
improved investigation pathways for profoundly regressive presentations.
Beyond Disintegration does not provide individual medical advice, diagnosis,
or treatment recommendations. Families should always seek guidance from
appropriately qualified healthcare professionals regarding individual medical
concerns and care decisions.
CHARITY REGISTRATION IN PROGRESS
Beyond Disintegration is in the process of formal registration with the Charity Commission for England and Wales. At present, we are not accepting donations until registration is complete.
KEY FACTS
CDD Was a Recognised Diagnosis
Childhood Disintegrative Disorder was historically recognised as a distinct diagnosis before being absorbed into broader ASD classifications.
Profound & Often Devastating
Catastrophic developmental regression can involve profound and enduring loss of language, cognition, adaptive functioning, regulation, and independence following a period of apparently typical development.
Outcomes Are Often Severe
Many children experience severe long-term acquired disability and lifelong support needs following profound regression.
Underlying Causes Are Unclear
The biological mechanisms underlying catastrophic developmental regression remain poorly understood and require further targeted investigation.
Research Remains Limited
Research specifically focused on catastrophic developmental regression remains comparatively fragmented and underdeveloped relative to the severity of these presentations.
Distinct Recognition Matters
Without clearer subgroup recognition, important biological and clinical distinctions may remain hidden within broad diagnostic systems.
OUR STORY
Beyond Disintegration was founded by parents of children who experienced profound and unexplained developmental regression.
Like many families, our journey began with hope. Our children were developing, learning, speaking, and engaging with the world as expected. Then, without clear explanation, those skills began to disappear.
As families connected across the UK and internationally, it became increasingly clear that these experiences were not only devastating, but also under-recognised within research and clinical systems.
Beyond Disintegration was founded to help change that.
We hope to help build visibility, scientific dialogue, community, and future research infrastructure around profound unexplained developmental regression and related catastrophic regression phenotypes.
Our goal is to help establish clearer and more researchable subgroups so that targeted studies can be carried out and future families are not left navigating devastating regression with little more than uncertainty and broad classification systems.
